Salmon River Rafting:
River of No Return
The Salmon River is often called the River of No Return, made famous by Native American tales that those who go down the river never come back. The rapids were so wild, and the cliffs so steep that those who ventured through were never seen again.
These tales, the deep canyon walls, and the awesome whitewater of Pine Creek rapids caused the Lewis and Clark Expedition to turn back and abandon the Salmon River as a route to the sea. Now, with the advent of the inflatable raft, these River of No Return rapids are great fun for recreation. What was perilous and deadly to wooden canoes is now a thrilling family adventure vacation!
The Salmon River was also made famous in the 1950's with the Marilyn Monroe movie of the same name: River of No Return. Here is a nice slideshow of the river with the theme song of the movie sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
